12 Days of Christmas: Day 12 - Custom Calibration and Setup Guide

Hello everyone, and welcome back to Day 12 of our 12 Days of Christmas Series! Hey look, Mom, we made it! I won't promise to do this again, but I hope this guide is packed with valuable information you can refer back to.

Today, we’re diving into custom calibrations for your Jailbroken Nvidia Shield Pro and Jailbroken Apple TV 4K, ensuring you get the most out of your devices—this applies to your televisions and sound systems as well! I’ll be linking a ton of different YouTube videos for each device throughout this post.

If you’re new here, welcome! We are D3vicx (Devices), and we specialize in programming premium streaming devices so you can enjoy paid TV entertainment for free—yes, that includes free 4K! For features like Dolby Vision and Atmos, you’ll need a debrid account or Stremio, but more on that later.

Why calibration?

Before we ship your Jailbroken Nvidia Shield Pro or Jailbroken Apple TV 4K to you, we configure Dolby Atmos within the device and Kodi. However, we can’t do this with Dolby Vision since our television doesn’t support it. If yours does, you’re in for a treat!

I recently watched a review of a Sony sound system, and a significant drawback was its tendency to reset settings without asking. Luckily, YouTuber Antoine has found a fix for that issue, which I’m excited to share with you.

We want to ensure you get the most out of your home theater setup. So, let’s dive right in!

Picture Calibration: The Key to Stunning Visuals

Apple TV 4K Calibration Tips

For HDR content on the Apple TV 4K, navigate to:
Settings > Video and Audio > Match Content
Ensure both Match Dynamic Range and Match Frame Rate are turned ON.

For additional tips, check out the video Apple TV 4K Features You Aren't Using (but should) by Digital Trends. I’ll include the video link for reference. While some features in the video may not apply to a Jailbroken Apple TV 4K, it’s still worth exploring if you plan to use paid applications.

Bonus Tip:
Want trailers to play automatically? In one of our movie IPAs, simply click on a movie, scroll up, and the trailer will start playing.

Nvidia Shield Pro Calibration Tips

Many settings on the Nvidia Shield Pro come pre-configured for optimal performance. Here’s what we’ve already set up for you:

  • AI Upscaling: Enabled and set to High under Video Upscaling Mode.

  • Detail Enhancement: Set to High.

  • Apply Upscaling While Streaming: Enabled.

To further enhance your experience, follow these steps:

  1. Enable HDR10 and Dolby Vision (if supported by your TV):

    • Go to Settings > Device Preferences > Display & Sound > Resolution.

    • Set it to the highest resolution your TV or projector supports.

  2. Adjust Power Preferences: Tailor the Power Control settings based on your preferences.

  3. Check Advanced Display Settings: Leave these set to default unless you have specific preferences.

Note:
If your TV doesn’t support HDR10, Dolby Vision, or 4K, those options will appear grayed out, indicating they are unavailable. Additionally, attempting to play 4K content on a non-4K TV may cause your system to slow down.

Sound Optimization for Nvidia Shield Pro

The Nvidia Shield TV Pro 2019 supports IR. To configure it:

  • Navigate to Setup IR in Volume Control.

We’ve already enabled features like Dolby Atmos, but if you want an in-depth walkthrough, check out Best Settings to Optimize Your Nvidia Shield TV Pro by 5Levels on YouTube.

Sound Calibration: Immersive Audio Perfection

When it comes to sound calibration, placement is key.

  • Soundbar: Position your soundbar in front of the television, directly facing you.

  • Surround Sound System: Place your rear speakers behind you, slightly above ear level, and to the sides of your seating area.

  • Subwoofer: Depending on its size, position the subwoofer under your couch, next to it, or near the TV and soundbar, facing you for optimal bass.

Once everything is set up, turn on Dolby Atmos and give it a test. For an even better experience, consider adding sound panels to improve room acoustics. Scatter panels are a great DIY option!

Test and Adjust Levels

Use your device's built-in audio settings to balance the sound perfectly:

  • Nvidia Shield Pro:

    • Go to: Settings > Sound > Audio Output

    • Select: Dolby Atmos or DTS:X, depending on your system.

  • Apple TV 4K:

    • Go to: Settings > Video and Audio > Surround Sound

    • Set it to: Best Available

Soundbar or AV Receiver Calibration

If you’re using a soundbar or AV receiver, take advantage of the calibration mic included with most models.

  1. Place the mic in your main seating position.

  2. Run the auto-calibration program.

  3. Ensure you’re using eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel) for the best audio quality.

Troubleshooting: Sony HT-A5000

Some users have reported issues with the Sony HT-A5000 soundbar, where settings unexpectedly reset. A common complaint is a significant drop in volume, even when maxed out.

Antoine, one of our trusted testers, tackled this issue. Through careful recalibration, he managed to restore functionality, though it wasn’t quite the same as before. His advice? Take a photo of your initial settings after setup. That way, if anything goes wrong, you’ll have a reference to get things back on track.

Network Calibration: Smooth Streaming, Every Time

For seamless streaming on your Jailbroken Nvidia Shield Pro or Jailbroken Apple TV 4K, a wired connection is ideal:

  • Ethernet: Use a CAT6 round cable for high-speed streaming of 4K movies, TV shows, and live sports.

  • WiFi: If you prefer wireless, invest in a mesh network system for stable connectivity.

Tips:

  • Test your internet speed directly on the device.

  • Use QoS (Quality of Service) settings in your router to prioritize bandwidth for streaming.

Lighting Calibration: Set the Mood

Don’t forget the ambiance! Add LED strips behind your TV or projector screen to reduce eye strain and enhance contrast. Set up smart lighting systems, like Philips Hue, to automatically adjust when you start a movie.

FAQ: Custom Calibration and Setup Guide

1. What’s the first step to setting up my system?

Start by positioning your soundbar or speakers correctly. Ensure the soundbar is in front of the TV, facing you, and any rear speakers are slightly behind and above ear level.

Use the calibration tools on your streaming device:

  • Nvidia Shield Pro: Settings > Sound > Audio Output (Select Dolby Atmos or DTS:X).
