Atypical

This is a beautiful show about an average family and the problems each one of them goes through in life. The main focus is on their son Sam who is Autistic. Sam is a young adult man in America trying to navigate his life. Sam, played by Keir Gilchrist, is going from High School to College but in a different way. This show has a great view of his struggles and how he gets through them one by one. Setting goals and daily routines help Sam grow as only he can. He has a girlfriend Paige Hardaway, played by Jenna Boyd, who is amazing by the way. To me, it’s pretty funny because Paige and Sam just tell each other how it is without any filters most of the time, people in relationships normally don’t do this. Sam does try to think about people’s feelings but at the end of the day, he is going to do what he wants.

As this show is mostly about Sam, Casey Sam’s little sister, played by Brigette Lundy-Paine, kind of steals the show with her struggles with her sexual identity. Casey starts a new school as a track star and right away we meet Izzy. Now, this is where the LGBTQ+ community feels included because Atypical brings up today's storylines about being young and gay in the world. It’s no longer black & white in the LGBTQ+ community anymore as well. It’s about how we use pronouns and how we dress to express how we feel inside. Season 3 is beautiful in how they touch on the problem of unexplained attraction. Is it friendship or is it something more, you don’t know you have to explore to find out. But in America, they have a problem with always writing at least one of the lesbian/bisexual characters in a relationship with a guy. In this case, both young ladies are in a relationship but right away Izzy talks about how it doesn’t feel right with her without knowing why at that time.

Casey and Izzy

Some things stated in Casey and Izzy's storyline I feel we have experienced in life, which deals with PDA. I don’t see PDA as an issue anymore so it shouldn’t be on screen anymore when there are bigger problems. I do love how they talk about something most shows don’t point out and that’s bisexual characters. Bisexuals have a big part in our communities and it’s about time their stories get told as well. Now I’m not going to say who identifies as who because it’s really only clear for one young lady from what I picked up. I also love that the storylines are about everyone’s future even though this is the last season. Just in case a spin-off happens, the writers put it out there for Casey and Izzy, knowing everyone wants to see more of them and how they grow as a couple.

This is an amazing show and heartbreaking all at once because Izzy goes through it. And I’ve had friends who have had tough childhoods like this as well. It’s not easy and my heart breaks for Izzy but it’s also great to see she has Elsa in her corner hardcore. Fivel Stewart plays Izzy and she is amazing at making you fall in love with Izzy and feeling her pain. If you are looking to watch this, check out our shop.
