Now, when it comes to whether should you own your own Modem/Router combo vs Rent from your Internet Provider, yes you should own. Hands down when it comes to tech and your privacy you need to own the device so you can give yourself as much privacy and protection when online as possible.
You are very curious as to what I’m talking about right?
Why do you think you need a VPN now in 2024? Your internet provider knows your every move when you are online. Nothing you do online does without notice to them. When people stream on Jailbroken Firesticks in 2024, they need a VPN because their internet providers have a block for the third-party APKs they are using.
Think we are joking, come to New York City and have Spectrum Internet and a Jailbroken Firestick. You are going to run into these problems.
Now, you are supposed to be able to add CloudFlare DNS to the Modem/Router renter you get from Spectrum but it doesn’t work. You can no longer go into the Modem/Router they provide for you and change your DNS to 001.001.001.001/ 001.000.000.001. If you do this, save it and then go back in and check. It will be changed back to the default IP address.

Why can’t I add CloudFlare DNS to my rented Modem/Router from my Internet Provider?

Let me start by asking you the question, which is, do you know what the CloudFlare DNS even does? If you don’t know, it gives you 100% privacy when you are online, meaning the Internet Companies can not see what it is you are doing.
Do you really think they are going to give you power over them?
Of course not. When they are losing Millions and Millions of clients a year to free streaming, they want to see who is doing it and stop it. Now, I know they can see Fire TV devices and the Apple TV devices but for some reason, Android TV devices are not affected by this just yet. On top of that, I provide an AdGuard with a built-in VPN on all our Jailbroken Android Boxes so no worries for you.
You want privacy for all your devices not just your streaming devices. You should be able to do this in 2024 but you can’t. So should you buy your own Modem/Router combo, Yes, what is taking you so long to do so?
On top of that, how much do you know about WiFi when buying this Modem/Router combo? I see people chasing WiFi 6, WiFi 6E, and WiFi 7. They are great but they don’t travel through walls too well. WiFi 5, it’s ok but it goes in and out a lot. The only WiFi that can travel far and through walls is WiFi 2.4GHz.

With that said do most people know if their streaming devices even use WiFi 6? The Nvidia Shield TV Pro 2019 came out 3 months before WiFi 6 so no it’s not on the device. But the Apple TV 4K 3rd Generation has WiFi 6, not WiFi 6E. So when getting these higher WiFis know if your device is even compatible before overspending.
If you do pick up the higher WiFis you will need a Mesh Networking System like Plume pods to help push the WiFi all over the home. This is not a sponsorship, I have used Plume Pods personally for years and they are amazing. With my own Modem/Router, I put the CloudFlare DNS on my Plume Pod Mesh Networking System to give me privacy for all my devices. So if you don’t have your own Modem/Router knowing you can use it still with the Mesh Networking System is a plus.
My Modem/Router is WiFi 5. See, I’m not into the WiFi 6, WiFi 6E, and WiFi 7. I still have my Jailbroken Nvidia Shield Pro and Jailbroken Apple TV 4K hooked up with the ethernet cable to give me the maximum power for my devices when streaming. Don’t worry here is where having your own Modem/Router comes into hand. Connecting directly to the devices gives them maximum power to stop buffering and lagging issues when streaming free Paid TV content.

Best Modem/Router Combo to buy?
NETGEAR Nighthawk WiFi 6E Router
To be very honest, you have to Google this first. Not every Modem/Router combo is made for third-party use. I’m a fan of Netgear Nighthawk products when it comes to Modem/Router combos. But you can buy them all separately if you like.
From reviews I read on Best Buy, people are saying the ones they own work 100 times better than the standard equipment they give you at Spectrum. I’m not going to even act surprised. They give us all bad equipment and then put a high price tag on it.
I do see other brands like ARRIS but I’ve never used this brand so I’m not too sure but the reviews are through the roof. Be careful when buying, don’t get something so cheap, and be surprised when it doesn’t work well. Also, try to stay within your budget, if you have to save for it, take the time and save. You can be doing research in the middle of saving and learning more about the Modem/Router.
Sometimes in between the savings you end up finding something that works even better. There are tons of blogs and YouTube videos that walk you through technology before you even pull out your wallet. Now here in 2024, you can’t really talk about sideloading on YouTube anymore due to copyright laws. There is no one to talk to when YouTube feels like taking your channel. One day you can wake up and it’s done. Twitter became a mess and yea, we all know that store.
