Because they’re getting paid to hype these products. Do they actually use these devices themselves? Absolutely not. They test them just long enough to make their video, then go right back to using their Nvidia Shield Pros.
Every year, it’s the same tired claim: “This device will finally dethrone the Nvidia Shield Pro!” Spoiler alert: it won’t. Nvidia designs GPU chips—an expertise no other company comes close to matching. If Nvidia were to release a new Shield TV Pro with all the bells and whistles, the competition wouldn’t stand a chance.
Sure, Apple TV comes close, but it’s held back by the limited number of tvOS IPAs available right now. And when you factor in the Nvidia Shield’s ability to double as a Plex server? Game over. That alone wipes out every other device on this list.

32-bit operating system: This makes the device painfully slow.
Ethernet adapter required: You have to buy an additional accessory just to reduce buffering. After adding up all the extras, I felt like I’d lost my mind.
2. Onn Box / Onn Box Pro
Released in summer 2023 and sold exclusively at Walmart for about $30, the Onn Box seems appealing at first glance. It even has a microSD card slot for storage expansion. But here’s the problem:
The Android 12 software system running on this device will quickly outpace its cheap hardware. One update and the Onn Box will be obsolete. The device’s RAM is severely limited, and even with expanded storage, it can’t keep up.
